    What Is Greengate Manchester?

Greengate is an area of SalfordGreater Manchester, located to the East of Salford. The Greengate Manchester postcode is M3.

Greengate Salford is bordered by the River Irwell and close to other popular Manchester areas like Blackfriars.

    Greengate Salford History

Greengate has been described as the ‘original historic core’ of Salford and boasts an extensive history.

Like many major hotspots around the world such as New York’s Brooklyn or London’s Canary Wharf, Greengate was once a run-down area, particularly during the 19th century. Today, thanks to ongoing regeneration, the area has undergone a huge transformation and is now a far cry from what it once was.

The Greengate area was once the administrative centre for judicial and military purposes. It was also the main area for the town market and annual Salford fairs.

Long before the Industrial Revolution, Greengate was noted as a key area for textiles and dyeing.

An interesting fact about Greengate’s history is that in 1800, the Clergyman William Cowherd established Christ Church chapel, which saw the development of a new denomination named the Bible Christian Church.

This denomination had a significant influence on the modern vegetarianism movement, and 41 members of the Bible Christian Church travelled across the Atlantic to the USA in 1817 to preach the message of abstaining from eating meat.

One famous landmark of Greengate was Collier Street Public baths, a Grade II* listed site that first opened in 1855. In the 20th Centruy, the baths were closed and turned into a matchbox factory.

By 1926, the second birth control clinic outside London was opened in Greengate, providing free family planning advice to working-class women.

    Greengate Manchester Regeneration

Throughout the 21st Century, Greengate has become a significant regeneration zone for Manchester

In 2013, Greengate Square was launched. This regeneration scheme, named the Greengate Scheme, generated £400m of investment and created 5,200 jobs.

By 2024, Greengate Salford will become a distinctive area ‘proud to be more Brooklyn than Manhattan’.

The 2024 vision for the area is for Greengate to be a place where businesses and people can prosper.

Plans in place for the regeneration of Greengate Manchester include a new Greengate Park and a Greengate Boulevard that links Greengate Square with the area’s new park. It will also link Market Cross to Collier Street Baths, another location set to be regenerated.

Many shops, restaurants, museums, corporate offices, and apartments will be opened up in the Greengate area to encourage tourism and promote Greengate Salford as a great place to live in Manchester.

Overall, the new development plans for the area will attract a lot of interest to Greengate and Manchester as a whole, boosting the region’s economy for many years to come.
