City Mayors Pledge Liverpool-Manchester Railway Board if Re-Elected

Earlier this year, plans for a significant new transport hub accommodating high-speed trains between Liverpool and Manchester were revealed.

While these are still just plans at the moment, a significant step towards making this project a reality has been taken by Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham. The respective mayors of Liverpool and Manchester have pledged to create a new public-private Liverpool-Manchester Railways Board to increase rail capacity between the two city regions.

The northern leg of HS2 was scrapped last year, leaving questions about how the railway services in the North West would be enhanced in line with the Northern Powerhouse Rail scheme. The Labour candidates have now received confirmation from the Government that options can be considered to bolster the transport links between Liverpool and Manchester.

As a result of talks, Steve Rotheram and Andy Burnham agreed that if re-elected for Labour on May 2nd, they would convene partners. They hope to see progress with this railway project coincide with the 200th anniversary of the world’s first passenger railway in Rainhill in 2029.

What Proposals Have Been Made So Far?

Andy Burnham has intimated that the board could set up a two-stop connection for Liverpool and Manchester to Manchester Airport, massively improving transport links to the North West’s most major long-haul airport.

He commented: “We would want something meaningful happening on the ground in time for the 200th anniversary in five years’ time. We’ve convened major stakeholders along the line, who all have an interest in a high ambition in the infrastructure.

“This is the biggest opportunity the North West of England will get in this century to put in place infrastructure that is on a par with London and the South East.”

According to the Liverpool Echo, Steve Rotheram has also put forward bold proposals for the rail overhaul, including the possibility of Merseyrail services going as far as Greater Manchester. He also said that a new station would allow for more convenient links across the city’s major transit points, although the proposed location of this new Liverpool train station has not been confirmed yet.

So, with all these ongoing and planned redevelopment efforts, is this a good time to invest in Liverpool?

How Could Transport Regeneration Bolster Liverpool Property Investment?

As various regeneration projects transform the city, Liverpool property investment also attracts renewed interest. In particular, luxury real estate is becoming more popular in the city centre.

Transport regeneration efforts can significantly impact property investment by improving accessibility and convenience, attracting more tenants and buyers, and increasing rental costs and property values.

This means that as these transportation projects progress towards completion, investors may see more profitability in Liverpool buy-to-let investment thanks to higher rental income and growing capital appreciation.
